A former stylist and costumier, Fiona now works as a New York-based fashion historian with her business Luxe Curated which organizes private, behind-the-scenes visits into archives and ateliers. She also has a side hustle @the_fiona.special where she finds new caretakers for items that need to leave her bulging closets.
I live on the Fair Isle of Staten and there's a lot of great spots for vintage shopping in the Forgotten Borough. Jody and her team at Nothing New are such gorgeous people who take great delight in seeing people go home with treasures. They're always having sales – it's eternally Buy 2, Get The 3rd Free – and their Fill A Bag for $20 Weekends are epic. You will always find something magical in this large, two-level store out here on The Rock. You want to make sure you look in all the corners for the treasure.
This is a fairly new store and soon they're moving to bigger premises nearby to accommodate the extensive range of items they stock. Lots of great clothing, including plenty of vintage, and often some very interesting home goods. I always enjoy the music they play in this shop. Yes, I have been known to sing as I look through the rails. I mean, who doesn't sing along to The Beatles and Thin Lizzy?
I discovered this store while I was going to FIT, which is just a block away. The selection is incredible – everything from high-end designers to brand-new chainstore merchandise, all in fantastic condition and at very reasonable prices. The staff are fabulous and very knowledgeable, and the people-watching in this particular store is super inspiring. Lots of IG magic moments in here.
I have a special love for this store because I've had so much fun here. Yes, I tried on gaudy wedding dresses with my friend during that sale and we hammed it up for amused bystanders. And then there's the annual leather sale; you have to imagine the big twinkle in my eye when I think about that. The mission of Housing Works is stellar and their work is so very important and necessary. Support them as much as you can – and don't forget to check out their website and the other stores, as well as shop the windows.
This weekend market is one of those special places that makes this city so easy to fall in love with. With a cast of glorious New York characters selling all kinds of extraordinary antique and vintage items, this place often feels like a vignette from a movie set. Most of the vendors have been around for a long time and have a vast knowledge of the business and also New York history; they've seen it all. You could spend a fortune – and have the most amazing time doing it.
This special store is owned by a woman who simply oozes style, the very lovely Sheryl Roberts, and everything in her store reflects her fierce sense of individuality. There's lots of amazing vintage pieces plus some really fabulous and funky newer items, including t-shirts and candles. Sheryl has collaborated with some major stylists and brands, and her crew are beautiful, lovely people. A trip to this place will have you feeling like one too.
